Allow you to wrap text in a column in the structure view.
I would like to be able to see 6 columns and have the option to see ALL the text wrapped not just the starting text. I'd like to retain the option to just see the starting text too though. I have used the full screen real estate but I can still only see the start of the wording.
Current work around is to only have 1 or 2 columns showing at once and add in the others as necessary later.
e.g. View currently shows:
Summary Description Labels Components Assignee
Client Doc Data in clie Docum Disclosure Sarah Sm
I'd like to see a layout like (not sure if this will work on here)
Summary Description Labels Components Assignee
Client Data in Docum Disclosure Sarah
Documentation client docs entation Smith
Many thanks
at least partial solution shipped with Structure 4.2, see comments

Hello May,
We're currently working on the major Structure 3.0 release. I can't say for sure if this feature makes it into this release, it's not among the primary feature list. However, we're remaking the user interface and it may be room to either fit this feature in, or at least lay grounds to add this feature soon after 3.0.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific at this time.
Kind regards,

Hello. Has there been anymore progress made on ths text wrap per column functionality? When will it be part of the next release? Any updates?

Michael, Matt, thanks for your feedback. We're working on improving Structure plugin in this matter. Hang on!

Hi Igor,
I'm trying out Structure right now, and while I am very impressed with it so far, the inability to see multiple lines of certain fields is a drawback for me as well.
I think the slickest solution from a user's perspective would be to allow users to set text wrap on a per-column basis, and to specify a maximum row height.

Hi Igor, and thanks for the response.
What you described (multiple lines that show only the description) would be a great solution for my team's needs.
I appreciate the difficulties of development, and also that my "humble opinion" comments do little to help you balance development priorities. :)

Matt, thanks for your comment.
I understand the problem, we'll try to work on the multiline grid cells at some point. I suggested "on-mouse-hover" solution because it is much easier to do, as the rest of the user interface may be left untouched. Of course easier does not mean better, but it usually means quicker.
A question for you: would you possible need to see multiple lines in all cells (custom fields with long texts), or do you need only to see more of the Description? (I'm thinking about the way MS Outlook shows second line with message body stretched across all other columns.)

Showing the text on mouse hover wouldn't meet my needs. My team is trying to use Structure in a group meeting forum to review status of outstanding issues. It is very close to working well, but we need to be able to see more information about each issue than fits on a single line - and that needs to work in the group format. The mouse pointer solution is only viable for a single reviewer at a time.
I agree that, if used improperly, wrapping text and showing multiple lines could wipe out the structural view. Then again, if used improperly, Structure and Jira as a whole are useless. My humble suggestion is that you provide multiline word wrap support, make it a configurable option, and allow your users to adapt their behavior to achieve their needs.

Shawn, thanks for your comment! At this moment, we're not yet working on this problem but we'll try to come up with a clever solution soon.

We may purchase 50 licenses of Structure but the ability to view full text is currently the biggest drawback for us, since you lose your place when showing the printable version.
I agree with Igor it would negatively affect the readability under normal circumstances, which is why I feel a toggleable button on the toolbar, or a setting for the view may be more appropriate.

Thanks for your comment.
I agree that showing the text only on mouse hover is not a very good solution from usability standpoint.
However, I think that if we allow the rows on the grid to have different heights - depending on how large the content is, it will kill the visibility of the hierarchical structure. This is not an issue on the Issue Navigator, but it definitely is on the structure widget. Take a look at the Printable Page - which behaves exactly like that. It is too easy to make the structure very much unreadable there, and we still haven't found a better solution.
We'll keep this in mind as we go on. Perhaps when we have a full issue preview (like GreenHopper), the severity of this issue will get a bit lower.
Thanks

Your suggestion for hovering with a mouse pointer is an alternative but I think there are already many functions that if you use a mouse click slightly in the wrong place on the page it does something you didn't mean to do.
From a usability point of view the option to wrap text underneath itself in the screen real estate you have allowed (i.e. it is the same row but expanded to make it taller to fit in all the content). As the person below mentions this is how the view works in the usual "Issues" tab.

This would be excellent if you could enchace structure to support this. Text wrapping is something I believe is supported as part of standard issues view. It would be very useful to have it as part of structure also!

Thanks for the idea!
Would it work if the full text was shown if you move mouse pointer to hover over it? (Overlapping other issues)
I'm not sure I got the idea about the layout - is it about having two rows of cells for each issue instead of one?
